Here, we measure aerobic capacity — the engine that funds your recovery between every sprint, every shift, and every quarter. It isn't just for distance runners; it decides how often your best effort shows up.
What this looks like
One mile, run for time, paced however you choose. That last part matters more than people think — because how you spend your mile tells us nearly as much as the clock does.
Why we test it
Because your aerobic engine funds everything else. It's not just “cardio for distance runners” — it's the system that pays for your recovery between sprints, between shifts, between the third quarter and the fourth. An athlete with a big engine repeats their best efforts; an athlete without one shows their best early and fades while the game is still going.
The mile is the most familiar engine test there is — nearly everyone has run one and remembers their time — which makes it a useful shared reference, as long as it's read properly.
What we're really looking for
- How do you pace it — even laps, or sprint-and-survive?
- What happens to your form when it gets hard?
- Is there a finishing gear in the last lap?
- How quickly do you recover afterward?
What good looks like
A good mile shows even or slightly negative splits, form that survives fatigue, and a genuine kick at the end — those signatures matter alongside any time, because they're what a real engine looks like in use.
For perspective at the far end: the world record is 3:43, and running under four minutes — once considered impossible — is still the mark of a world-class miler. At the other end, the published school fitness standards set health floors by age and sex, and they account for how “good” changes as you grow: the bar rises steadily for boys through the teens while holding flatter for girls. We convert your time against those age-and-sex-adjusted standards in your report. The health floor is a floor — training athletes should clear it with room to spare — and your trend across retests is the number we care about most.
When the number and the ability don't match
Quick in short bursts but a rough mile? Your speed is writing checks your engine can't yet cash — common in explosive athletes, and very fixable. Strong mile but fading repeat sprints? The base is there; the top of the engine (repeatability at high intensity) is the next build. Pacing chaos with a decent time? There's free speed hiding in strategy alone.
What we do about it
Your time, your pacing shape, and your recovery speed set the plan: base building, interval work, or simply learning to spend an engine you already own. And because engine testing is demanding, we schedule it deliberately — often its own day — so the result reflects your capacity, not your fatigue.
What's underneath this number
The mile is steady-state; most sports aren't. The next layer asks a harder question: can you sprint, recover, and sprint again?
