The Bench Press Test

Here, we measure upper-body pushing strength. Even in non-contact sports, this capacity can play a real role in the overall athletic picture.

What this looks like

You warm up, then press a moderately heavy weight for as many clean reps as you can. From the weight and the rep count, we calculate an estimate of your maximum strength — a method that research shows predicts a true one-rep max within a few percent.

We test it this way on purpose. A max-out asks a developing athlete to hold their best technique under the heaviest weight they've ever touched — the exact moment technique is most likely to fail. The rep-max estimate gives us the same information without that trade. Then your bodyweight turns the estimate into the number that matters: strength per pound of you.

Why we test it

Partly because it's a real marker of upper-body pushing strength — and pushing shows up everywhere: stiff-arms, box-outs, checks, getting off blocks, getting off the ground.

And partly because the bench is the language of the weight room. The NFL Combine's 225 rep test made it famous, every teammate asks about it, and pretending it doesn't matter to athletes doesn't work. So we test it honestly and put it in its place: one useful measure of upper-body force — not a summary of you as an athlete.

What we're really looking for

  • How does the bar actually move — smooth and controlled, or fighting for its path?
  • What positions do the shoulders take to complete the movement?
  • Does the whole body stay organized as the reps build?
  • Do both sides press evenly?

What good looks like

Start with the question your sport actually asks. A receiver breaking a press at the line, a forward holding position in the post, a wrestler controlling a tie-up — these demand real pushing strength, but different amounts of it, and none of them demand a powerlifter's bench. So "good" is always relative to your bodyweight and your sport's contact level.

Some numbers to anchor your thinking. A bench press around your own bodyweight is a strong marker for a team-sport athlete in the later teen years. Competitive teen powerlifters — kids who specialize in exactly this — average about 0.8× bodyweight at 13, building to 1.3× by 18 for boys and 0.7× to 0.9× for girls. If you're in a collision sport, the demand curve is higher; if you play a court sport, pressing strength supports you but will never be the headline.

And for perspective from the top: the NFL Combine's famous test is 225 pounds for max reps, and the strongest linemen push past 30. That's years of accumulated strength — a direction to grow toward, not a bar to clear this season.

When the number and the ability don't match

A big bench with a modest row is a common pattern — pushing strength outrunning the pulling strength that mirrors it — and it's worth balancing before it shows up in the shoulders. A modest bench next to strong everything-else usually just means pressing hasn't been trained yet; it responds quickly.

What we do about it

We compare your estimated strength to your bodyweight and to your sport's demands, then decide what it earns: if pressing is genuinely behind, we build it; if it's outrunning your rowing strength — its true counterpart — we balance the ratio before your shoulders pay for the difference; and if it's already in proportion, we leave it alone and spend your training time where the bigger opportunity lives.

What's underneath this number

A strong press needs more than arms: shoulder positions you can reach, a trunk that transmits force, shoulder blades that know their job. That's the layer we screen before the bar gets loaded.
